Senior communications major Chardae Jenkins was recognized with a 2013 Presidential Outstanding Student Award for her leadership role as a former vice president of Associated Students, Incorporated (ASI) at CSU Dominguez Hills, as well as serving in the Multicultural Center’s Diversity in Action Interns program, and the Loker Student Union Board of Directors. She has contributed to social media communications for the College of Extended and International Education, and hosted an on-air show for the university’s radio station KDHR. In the community, she is also a member of the NAACP and the Carson Black Chamber of Commerce.

“I’m overwhelmed by [receiving] the outstanding student award,” Jenkins said, admitting, “I’ve always had my eye on this award.”

As an active member of the Pan African Union, she also took the stage when that group was recognized with the Presidential Award for Outstanding Program by a Student Organization for its efforts to organize and host its annual fashion show.

“The point is to teach students how to coordinate a large-scale event,” Jenkins said of the fashion show.

With a solid set of skills under her belt, the Public Relations Student Society of America member already runs her own communications and public relations firm “Image is Everything,” which is focused on urban entertainment and social media.

“Through different leadership opportunities [at CSU Dominguez Hills] I’ve been able to do a lot of things I’ve never even dreamed of doing,” she said.

But she has no intention of stopping there. With her sights set high, she is committed to giving back to the university and aspires to become a major donor; she would like to see her name on a campus building in the future.
