Faculty Highlights: November 2013

Our faculty members participate in conferences around the world, conduct groundbreaking research, and publish books and journal papers that contribute to their field and highlight their expertise. We feature those accomplishments and more in this section.

College of Arts and Humanities

Nancy Cheever, chair and associate professor of communications, will be a guest panelist of NPR station 89.3 KPCC’s Crawford Family Forum on Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. in Pasadena. The forum’s topic for that evening is “Tech in the Classroom: How Much is Too Much?”

A. Marco Turk, chair and emeritus professor of negotiation, conflict resolution and peacebuilding, was presented the L. Randolph Lowry Award by the Southern California Mediation Association at a cocktail reception on Nov. 1. The award is given to a member of the dispute resolution community who inspires through passion and dedication to education in the field. Turk was honored for his work in founding the university’s NCRP program.

Ericka Verba, associate professor of history, was one of the organizers “The Other September 11th,”an interdisciplinary conference on the history and legacies of Chile’s military dictatorship and struggles for democracy. The conference took place Nov. 8 and 9 at the University of California, Los Angeles.

College of Business Administration and Public Policy

Theodore Byrne, assistant professor of public administration, was awarded the U.S. Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service in the U.S. military. Byrne is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve where he serves in the Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG).

College of Education

Richard Gordon, professor of teacher education, contributed a book chapter, “Critical Pedagogy and Children’s Music Flow: Curriculum Design and Assessment” to the newly published textbook “Critical Practice in P-12 Education: Transformative Teaching and Learning” (Information Science Reference, 2013).

College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences

Terry McGlynn, professor of professor of biology, was the lead author in “To Drink or Grasp? How Bullet Ants (Paraponera clavata) Differentiate Between Sugars and Proteins in Liquids” published first online in Naturwissenschaften The Science of Nature (Nov. 2013)
