Pianist Sean Chen, a Southern California native who at 28 years old is a rising star in the music world, will perform in California State University, Dominguez Hills’ (CSUDH) winter concert Steinway by Starlight at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the University Theatre.
Steinway by Starlight is an annual performance to showcase the university’s designation as an “All-Steinway School,” which it received from Steinway & Sons in 2014. Music majors at CSUDH learn, practice and perform only on pianos designed by Steinway & Sons and have the opportunity to host world-class performers and master classes.
Among Chen’s accolades are winning the American Pianists Association’s DeHaan Classical Fellowship, one of the most significant prizes available to an American pianist. Chen also took 3rd Prize at the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, becoming the first American to reach the finals since 1997, and received 2nd Prize at the 2011 Seoul International Music Competition. The Julliard graduate’s performances include appearing as soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra under Gerard Schwarz, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Suwon City Philharmonic, and the New West Symphony.
Steinway by Starlight will open with a performance by CSUDH Guitar Studies major Tara Rose Davison, who began her career as a successful opera singer. She will sing and perform solo on classical guitar, after which she will join a guitar trio with two CSUDH faculty members: Scott Morris chair of the Department of Music and supervisor of Guitar Studies; and David Issacs, instructor of classical guitar.
Steinway by Starlight takes place Thursday, Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m., in CSUDH’s University Theatre. Tickets are $20 for the general public; $10 for CSUDH faculty, staff, students, alumni and seniors (55+) with I.D. Partial proceeds will benefit the university’s All-Steinway program.
CSU Dominguez Hills is located at 1000 E. Victoria St., Carson, Calif. The University Theatre is off Toro Center Drive. Click to see the campus map and directions. Parking in Lot 6 will be complimentary that evening.
