Shedding Light on the Fall Dance Concert

December 5, 2011

“Moving through the Light” is a fitting name for the California State University, Dominguez Hills fall 2011 dance concert. The production, presented by the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, debuts a state-of-the-art lighting system, and will be performed by students on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10, at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre.

The theatre’s new Intelligent Lighting equipment will allow for color mixing, projecting large beams of light and color, projecting gobos (discs cut with designs) on the floor and cyclorama (a curved wall at the back of the stage), and allow for special effect animation such as strobe, flowing water, flames and moving scenic elements. Four of the concert’s collection of contemporary, world, and ballet dance style pieces will utilize the upgraded lighting system.

“This is rock ‘n’ roll, high-tech style lighting that can… do things that normal lighting can’t,” said Doris Ressl, dance program coordinator and assistant professor of dance.

Not only did Ressl have the fall dance concert in mind when requesting funds for this lighting system, but specifically “Flick-Flac,” the piece she choreographed. In it, dancers will be dressed in filmstrip-motif costumes on loan from Ball State University (Muncie, IN), where the dance was originally performed. The costumes will be adapted for this performance, but the piece will rely on the new lighting system to recreate the flickering effect of an old movie reel being run.

Beyond use during performances, technical theater courses will now have the ability to teach students how to operate and design with Intelligent Lighting, which is the current standard for many professional theaters, according to Ressl.

Concert pieces, “Once Upon Aurora’s Dream,” choreographed by CSU Dominguez Hills dance student Rebecca Ledesma, and “Flick-Flac,” will be adjudicated at the American College Dance Festival Association Conference-Baja Region, which will be hosted on campus March 23-26, 2012.

Tickets are $12 general admission, and $10 for students and seniors. Group rates are available. For more ticket information and to purchase tickets online, visit: http://csudh.edu/theatre/tickets.htm or call the box office at (310) 243-3589.
