Shell Donates $25,000 to CSU Dominguez Hills

April 15, 2011

Shell Pipeline Company LP, with a regional office in Carson, has donated $25,000 to California State University, Dominguez Hills to support a number of activities on campus this semester.

Alan Caldwell, communications manager at Shell Pipeline, presented the check last month during the annual Faculty Awards reception.

“Shell’s support of these activities is a testament to their commitment to the CSU Dominguez Hills community and to higher education,” said Greg Saks, vice president of University Advancement.

The $25,000 donation helped to sponsor the Faculty Awards reception, and also allowed the university to double the honorariums awarded to the honored faculty. In addition, a portion of the donation helped sponsor the recent Natural and Behavioral Sciences Distinguished Speaker Series featuring seismology expert Dr. Aaron Velasco, and will be used toward the April 21 President’s Scholarship Reception, which recognizes community and business partners and this year’s Presidential Scholars.

Through Shell’s support of the President’s Scholarship reception, the university hopes to expand the slate of students in the Presidential Scholars Program for 2011-12. The most prestigious academic scholarship on campus, the Presidential Scholars Program provides full tuition and other benefits to some of the region’s most talented students.

Lastly, the donation will be used for a special School of Education credential ceremony in May. The ceremony is “graduation” for the men and women who have completed their teaching credential at the university.

“Shell is working diligently to be the most innovative energy company in the world, and part of innovation is a strong educational foundation,” Caldwell said. “Investing in the future success of students in Carson and the South Bay helps us contribute to a vibrant community. That is why we are excited to work with CSU Dominguez Hills to support students as the innovators of the future.”

Shell has been a longtime donor and supporter of the university, and in recent years has partnered in other ways, as well, including participation on the CSU Dominguez Hills Foundation board of directors, and hiring faculty and students for projects.
