Church has long been the heart and soul of the African American community, and when the California State University system was looking at effective ways to increase college-going rates among black students, the church was a natural starting point. National statistics show that only 55 percent of students from low-income families go on to college from high school compared to 84 percent among high-income families, with the Los Angeles region mirroring that trend.
