California State University, Dominguez Hills' (CSUDH) Archives and Special Collections Department has received $260,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to continue its work digitalizing artifacts that detail life for Japanese Americans held in internment camps during World War II, and daily life during the first half of the 20th Century. “Inciteful Clay,” a national touring exhibit that offers an unparalleled overview of an emergent movement in contemporary ceramics dedicated to social commentary, opens at the California State University, Dominguez Hills University Art Gallery on September 10 and runs through October 7. Incorporating a broad range of work, this selection of 27 ceramics looks at artists who have mustered an age-old medium to issue provocative critiques of current social and political inequities. Watts 50 Years after Rebellion Explored in Exhibition Opening August 11
Through a collection of publications, correspondence, reports and books chronicling and analyzing the six days of destruction in the Watts community in 1965 set alongside an intimate portrait of Watts today, California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) has put together an archives and photography exhibition, “Watts: Then and Now,” to mark the 50th anniversary of the Watts Rebellion. The exhibit in the University Library Cultural Art Center opens on Aug. 11–Fifty years to the day of the unrest–and is part of CSUDH's year-long commemoration of the historic events that awakened the nation to social injustices and racial tensions in predominately poor African American communities. Come check it out! The next time you're in Welch Hall at California State University, Dominguez Hills come up to the fourth floor and check out the two new “wallpaper” displays that showcase the photographic talent of the university's alumni, and a few current students. The photo montages feature the work of alumni who earned degrees in art and design, digital media arts, as well as a few who majored in anthropology and communications. An Art and Design Department selection committee, chaired by assistant professor Ellie Zenhari, selected the best photographs for the displays based on esthetics and technical quality. Graphic arts student Adrian Gonzalez featured in Communications Arts magazine
Art and design student Adrian Gonzalez scours a thrift store before finding what he is looking for–an old vintage chair. When he gets home, he places it on the floor, cleans it up and takes a seat to try it out. He then stands, grabs an aluminum baseball bat and begins breaking the chair to bits. Gonzalez arranges the pieces on a canvas placed flat on the floor, adds blue and green shades of paint and dribbles water all over to create an “ocean feel.” He grabs his camera and begins taking pictures, rearranges the splintered wood, then takes more shots.
