‘Crossing Borders’ Exhibition Explores Migration in Contemporary Art
“Crossing Borders: Stories of Migration in Contemporary Art,” a new exhibit in the California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) University Art Gallery, opened Oct. 22 to packed room of artists and enthusiasts who were treated to artistic examinations centered around the U.S.-Mexico border where migrants often find themselves at odds with cultural bias and political issues. CSU Dominguez Hills Archives Department Puts Historical Long Beach Fire Department Photos Online
Thousands of historical images depicting 70 years of the Long Beach Fire Department, beginning in 1898, are now accessible online through the California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Department of Archives and Special Collections' website at http://digitalcollections.archives.csudh.edu. The 5,000 photos are part of a collection of more than 9,000 negatives and prints donated to CSUDH four years ago by the Long Beach Firemen's Historical Museum, the result of a Long Beach Naval Memorial Heritage Association grant to digitally preserve the images. University to Lead NEH-Funded Archives Project to Digitize Japanese American Internment Documents
The California State University, Dominguez Hills Archives and Special Collections Department, in collaboration with archives divisions at CSU Fresno, San Jose State, CSU Northridge, CSU Fullerton and CSU Sacramento, has been awarded a $40,000 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to plan the digitization and creation of a website for collections relating to Japanese Americans' incarceration during World War II. “We are thrilled that NEH has recognized this project, especially since the topic is still of great interest to scholars and the Japanese American community in California and elsewhere,” said Greg Williams, principal investigator for the grant and director of Archives ... The Archives and Special Collections Department in the Library at CSU Dominguez Hills has received a generous donation of a collection relating to author Upton Sinclair (1878-1968). One of the most prolific authors of the 20th century, Sinclair saw “The Jungle,” his muckraking novel exposing the meat packing industry, lead directly to food and drug reforms following its sensational reception in 1906. “The Jungle" is still taught in classes all over the world.
