Going Underground to Understand the Universe
By Laurie McLaughlin A half-mile underground, an enormous steel tank is filled with 50,000 tons of water surrounded by light-detecting devices. It serves partly as a giant target for cosmic particles–like protons, electrons, and neutrons–raining down on Earth from the sky. One type of particle, the neutrino, has been somewhat of a mystery to physicists until recent decades, but its activity helps explain how the sun and stars continue to shine. “We don't realize it, but trillions of neutrinos travel through our bodies every second,” said California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) professor of physics James Hill, who has been studying this very tiny phenomenon for more ... VIDEO: Biologist Terry McGlynn Leads Study in Costa Rica On Bullet Ant Foraging Habits
Terry McGlynn, associate professor of biology, was in Costa Rica in January at the Organization for Tropical Studies' La Selva Biological Station as a visiting professor for its Introduction to Tropical Ecology, a four-week course in field for graduate students. During the month students, who came from universities through the U.S. and abroad, also learned how to use video to share their work. As part of the learning process they produced videos for an internal Student Film Festival. For National Geographic's Explorers Journal, a member of a two-man video production company who taught the students the basics of filming and editing wrote about the experience and the resulting videos the ...
