The meeting, led by CSU Dominguez Hills President Mildred Garcia, a member of the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, was held March 1 at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Where on earth is Mauritania? Seven students from the CSU Dominguez Hills Model United Nations program know exactly where it is - and much more. They represented the west African nation, acting as delegates in mock sessions during the Harvard National Model United Nations conference (HNMUN), held in Boston, Mass. on February 16 through 19. Founded in 1955, only a decade after the creation of the United Nations, Harvard National Model United Nations is, according its organization's website, the largest, oldest, and most prestigious conference of its kind. Can you name any nation that has sealed its bond with another nation by successfully sharing ideals, especially freedom, liberty, democracy and prosperity? Such was a question that the Honorable Yeon-sung Shin, consul general of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles, posed to an audience of more than 100 students, faculty, and staff on Feb. 8 in Loker Student Union. Don Hata: Historian Delivers Talk on Japanese American Incarceration
Emeritus professor of history Don Hata spoke on the political, social, and economic issues that led to the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II and the aftermath of the prison camps on Nov. 29 in the University Library, in complement to the exhibit, “Building Evidence: Japanese Americans in Southern California During Mid-Century - 40 Years of Collecting, An Exhibition.” The assemblage of photographs, publications, and documents is focused on the daily lives and obstacles faced by Japanese Americans in the South Bay and Los Angeles prior to, during, and after World War II. “Building Evidence” is now on view through March 2012 in University Archives and Special Collections, ...
