‘Promise Zone’ Designation Opens Door for CSUDH to Help Reduce Poverty in South L.A.
California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) is one of the higher education partners in the recent designation of South Los Angeles as a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development “Promise Zone,” which opens the door for communities to work more closely with the federal government to help improve educational and economic opportunities and reduce poverty. South L.A. is now one of 13 urban Promise Zones in the nation, and Los Angeles is the only city to have two designations within its boundaries. When Layla Sewell is out in the community and she hears someone say, “Look! It's Ms. Sewell!” it warms her heart –as it should having worked to warm the hearts of entire families for over 20 years. Sewell is executive director of the Awaken the Greatness Foundation (ATG), which she founded in late 2011. The Los Angeles-based non-profit facilitates, organizes and moderates workshops, classes and events that “enrich and improve the lives of African-American parents and youth.” “Working with young people just seems to come naturally to me. Portillo, a senior who plans to graduate with his bachelor's degree in spring 2016, is driven by his desire to help others, particularly those from underserved communities. CSUDH Day of Service helps strengthen community pride in Watts
Guided by their civic duty and desire to help enrich the communities in which they live and/or serve, dozens of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) students and leaders joined residents in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles on Aug. 15 during “CSUDH Day of Service” to plant seeds of hope in a community still struggling 50 years after the Watts Rebellion. Armed with paint brushes, cleaning supplies and gardening tools to help beautify Fire Station 65 and the Bradley Milken Family Source Center in Watts, the volunteers were joined by a number of men from Beacon House, a residential alcoholic/drug recovery facility for men in San Pedro.
