With 37 alumni teaching hundreds of students in dozens of classrooms, California State University, Dominguez Hills' (CSUDH) 5th annual Professor for a Day on March 14 was its largest and most professionally diverse gathering of honorary professors to date. Organized by the Office of Alumni Relations, each year Professor for a Day enables CSUDH alumni to share their knowledge, experience, and advice with students in classes matched to their fields. A new internship with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles (NHMLA) and the STEM Teachers in Advanced Residency (STAR) program in the College of Education at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) is giving teacher candidates additional classroom tools to excite young students about the sciences. Biology students at Cal State Dominguez Hills will soon be able to do their own DNA sequencing, seeing the molecular structures of plants, bacteria and other living things more closely than ever before. The Carson university's Department of Biology has won a National Science Foundation grant for $216,310 to purchase an Illumina MiSeq DNA sequencer. “We can do tons more experiments,” said Karin Kram, an assistant professor of biology who led a team that sought the grant. “One of the things I'd really like to do is have students in my microbiology classes identify microbes found on our phones. More Than $5.2M In Grants Awarded to Cal State Dominguez Hills
CARSON, CA - California State University Dominguez Hills has received four grants worth more than $5.2 million. The funds will provide 240 local high school students with the resources they need to excel in high school and graduate from college, school officials announced Monday. The five-year U.S. Department of Education grants will support 60 students participating in CSUDH Upward Bound programs at five local schools: Carson High School, Gardena High School, Hawthorne High School, Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, and Thomas Jefferson High School in South Los Angeles.
