On Saturday, Oct. 5, California State University, Dominguez Hills will welcome thousands of Spanish-speaking families to campus for the fifth annual Educación: Feria Es El Momento from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fair is part of a long-term education campaign led by Spanish-language television network Univision to increase the involvement of Spanish-speaking parents in their children's education, reduce the Latino dropout rate, and promote a college-going culture–all issues that are very important to this university, as well. Women and Philanthropy: Mentors, Students Develop Strong Bonds
Several participants in the Women and Philanthropy (W&P) group at California State University, Dominguez Hills reunited during the organization's annual fall student-mentor mixer held in the Loker Student Union on Sept. 18. The event was also an opportunity for new and potential participants to meet and discover details about the program. Founded by Shirley Smith, the wife of former mayor of Carson and past member of university advisory boards Gilbert Smith, the organization is dedicated to mentorship between women who are successful professionals and those who are students at the university. CSU Trustees’ Award Recipient John Bagnerise: Recapturing a Future Nearly Lost
Just when many 21-year-old undergraduates are about to begin their last academic term, John Bagnerise was starting a much different sort of term–an 18-year-to-life sentence at Folsom State Prison. He spent the next 22 years incarcerated in some the toughest prisons in California for a crime for which he was present, but did not commit. “I had to convince a parole board that I was suitable to be a part of society and could readjust to a world that had become foreign to me,” said the determined 49-year-old. CSU Dominguez Hills Awarded Inaugural STEM Advantage Scholarship-Internship-Mentorship Program
Twelve students majoring in computer science/computer technology with program emphases in areas such as homeland security and information security at California State University, Dominguez Hills are receiving close to $8,000 each for tuition, fees, and books for the year.
