Gabriel Ybarra: Chicano/a Studies Major Sets the Bar High
Even before graduating from California State University, Dominguez Hills, junior Gabriel Ybarra is starting his academic law career. He was recently accepted to the Law Fellows Program through the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law Academic Outreach Resource Center for the spring 2012 term, and in January he began attending monthly day-long “Saturday Academy” workshops affiliated with the program. The preparatory academy provides students a glimpse into to the fellows program, a chance to meet their prospective mentors and other key people, and to tour UCLA School of Law and the UCLA campus. Can you name any nation that has sealed its bond with another nation by successfully sharing ideals, especially freedom, liberty, democracy and prosperity? Such was a question that the Honorable Yeon-sung Shin, consul general of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles, posed to an audience of more than 100 students, faculty, and staff on Feb. 8 in Loker Student Union. Answering the rhetorical question, Shin shared an overview of the evolving relationship between the U.S. and Republic of Korea (South Korea), beginning with the Korean War more than six decades ago. Olympic Hopeful Carmelita Jeter Returns to Her Alma Mater
A bit of perspective has helped Carmelita Jeter (Class of '06, B.A. physical education) find her way to the front of the pack again. Returning to her alma mater to address a standing-room-only audience as the speaker of the Alumni Spotlight series on Thursday, Feb. 9, Jeter, who in June will participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints with her eye on competing in the London Summer Olympics this August, discussed how her successes and failures while at CSU Dominguez Hills, and later as a professional athlete, have taught her that it's not always how fast you run that wins races. Stone, president/CEO of the California Black Chamber of Commerce and director of the California Black Chamber Foundation. Super Sunday: Spreading the Gospel of College to African American Communities
Church has long been the heart and soul of the African American community, and when the California State University system was looking at effective ways to increase college-going rates among black students, the church was a natural starting point. And since 2005, CSU president, vice presidents and Chancellor Charlie Reed–along with students and staff from the 23 campuses–have been visiting black churches throughout the state during the month of February for an event that is known as Super Sunday. On Saturday, Jan. 28, approximately 200 people were on campus to attend the College is Possible town hall meeting sponsored by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) and Staples Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Staples office supply company. Intended to promote the importance of higher education for students and their families, the event provided participants with the opportunity to attend various bilingual presentations on topics such as preparing and paying for college, applying for college, and researching financial aid. California State University, Dominguez Hills President Mildred García lauded literary and creative works by 53 resident faculty and staff authors who have published books or other media since 2008 during a reception in the University Bookstore on Thursday, Feb. 2. Stephen A. Book (1941-2012): Mathematician, Researcher Had Impact on Student Success and Aerospace Industry
Emeritus professor of mathematics Stephen A. Book died at his home in Seal Beach, Calif. on January 10. An expert on probability and statistics, he served as a faculty member at California State University, Dominguez Hills from 1970 to 2001. "[Steve] volunteered his garage for my wife and me to use for storage during our 1972 move from Seattle to Los Angeles," says Miles, recalling how the friendship began almost immediately upon his arrival to California to take a teaching position at the university.
