The week-long project was led by Cal State University Dominguez Hills student Amber Alvarado, who is studying to be an ecologist and environmental scientist. Alvarado visited nearly 20 homes in July and handed residents fliers on what food and yard items to collect and the benefits of collecting organic waste. CalMatters: Black Women in California Are Overburdened and Underserved, New Poll Finds
Source: CalMatters A new poll finds 2 out of every 5 Black women in California are just one paycheck away from financial instability. The first-of-its-kind survey of 1,258 Black women across the state revealed 37% work two or more jobs – and 62% of them said the second job is “essential” and they would “not be able to make ends meet” without it. The Evitarus research firm polled the women last spring for the California Black Women's Collective Empowerment Institute, a research nonprofit in Carson, near Long Beach. CSUDH Hosts Next Generation of Black Leaders
The intersection of public policy and individual liberty provided the substance of this year's African American Leaders for Tomorrow (AALT) program as 50 high school students from across the state joined educators, business leaders, and elected officials for a four-day leadership conference on the CSUDH campus. The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) created the program to equip young men and women of color with the tools and experience necessary to excel in higher education and to become leaders within their communities and beyond. Source: CBS A new California Black Women's Think Tank survey finds that two out of every five Black women in California are just a paycheck away from financial instability. The survey of 1,258 Black women voters across the state found that 37 percent work two or more jobs - this includes 62 percent who do so because it is "essential" and they would "not be able to make ends meet" without the additional income. Staff Spotlight: Ludivina Snow
“I've always wanted to help people from underserved communities,” says Ludivina Snow, Director of the Toro Guardian Scholars (TGS) program at CSUDH. “While I was in grad school, I had the privilege of working at an alternative school for current and former foster youth, and young people involved in the youth and adult carceral systems. I knew then that I would always want to work serving these populations.” In her role leading TGS, Snow is doing exactly that. Governor Appoints Toro Alum to CSU Board of Trustees
On June 29, California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed recent CSUDH graduate Jonathan Molina Mancio to the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees, the oversight and regulatory body for the entire 23-campus system. Mancio will commence his two-year term as student trustee in Fall 2023, when he will also begin attending Cal State Fullerton's Master of Science in Higher Education program. Mancio graduated from CSUDH in May 2023 with his bachelor's degree in business administration and a strong record of student leadership and advocacy experience. This includes my four younger siblings and single mother. I work hard at UPS part time and just completed my degree in labor studies at California State University, Dominguez Hills. I'm a proud member of Teamsters Local 396, which represents transportation and sanitation workers in Southern California. As a shop steward, I apply my knowledge to help my co-workers at UPS advocate for themselves. The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Mildred García to serve as the 11th chancellor of the California State University. García currently serves as president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and previously served as president of California State University, Fullerton and California State University, Dominguez Hills.
