Student Research Day (SRD), CSUDH's primary showcase of student research and scholarship, held its 17th annual competition on Feb. 16 and 17. Despite the obstacles presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a large cohort of Toro student researchers descended on Loker Student Union for the yearly event–with a smaller contingent participating virtually. Over 100 projects were presented in oral presentations or poster sessions. Of those, 28 were selected for honors at the Reception and Award Assembly that closed the event (see list below). CSUDH Art Gallery Presents an Exhibition of Work by Lauren Halsey
The University Art Gallery at CSUDH proudly presents a solo exhibition of work by the Los Angeles-based artist Lauren Halsey. The exhibition will be on view March 12 through December 10, 2022; Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to an opening reception for “Lauren Halsey” on Saturday, March 12, from 12 to 6 p.m. The artist's latest venture in funkified placemaking, this exhibition extends Halsey's architectural mappings, materializing itself in objects, names, remembrances, and colors of home. Homecoming 2022 Brings Toro Alums Back to Campus
CSUDH celebrated Homecoming 2022 on Saturday, Feb. 19, welcoming hundreds of Toro alumni and their families back to campus for a day of fun activities, reunions, and discovery. Toros Engage and Entertain at the Super Bowl
CSUDH had a strong showing at Super Bowl LVI, with Toros involved in several aspects of the historic Los Angeles occasion and the events leading up to it. Halftime Show In a university first, the CSUDH Dance Team got to perform in the Super Bowl halftime show for 70,000 fans in SoFi Stadium with Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem. Six student members of the dance team, one recent alumna, and Coach Cilecia Foster performed as part of the 150-person field cast during Eminem's piece and the concert finale. Whether it's the bones in the Paris catacombs or the historical use of psychedelics, television producers know who to call when they need some expert commentary: CSUDH associate professor of anthropology Sarah Lacy. In the last six months, she has been featured prominently on both the History Channel's The UnXplained with William Shatner and CuriosityStream's History by the Numbers, which also airs on Smithsonian Channel Canada. Lacy's foray as an expert commentator started as a fun YouTube project. Irene Tung Earns Visionary Grant for Pregnancy Research
Assistant Professor of Psychology Irene Tung has been awarded a Visionary Grant from the American Psychological Foundation in the amount of $19,979. The grant, which seeks to support research that uses psychology to solve social problems, will fund Tung's pilot study of emotional health and stress physiology during pregnancy for one year. Tung, who joined the CSUDH faculty in January 2022, began researching the impacts of early life stress on children's development while earning her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. CSUDH to Host COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic Feb. 16
In partnership with Rite Aid, CSUDH is once again hosting a pop-up vaccination clinic for students, faculty, staff, and the public. The campus and Rite Aid previously held pop-up clinics in May, June, and September of 2021. The walk-in clinic will take place February 16 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in CSUDH's Extended Education building. A team of Rite Aid health professionals will administer Pfizer and Moderna vaccines (first or second doses), single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines, and boosters. CSUDH Ranks Second in the Nation for Economic Mobility
A new report has ranked CSUDH second in the United States for economic mobility, with six CSU campuses total claiming the top ten spots. Public policy think tank Third Way produced the report, which examines how higher education helps low-income students achieve economic success. Titled “Out with the Old, in with the New: Rating Higher Ed by Economic Mobility,” the study showed that institutions offering a quick return on investment and enrolling a larger percentage of Pell-eligible students as part of their student body were the most successful at helping students climb the economic ladder.
