The unprecedented COVID-19 health crisis has affected everyone in some way, but many already-vulnerable groups have been among the hardest hit. Local non-profit Angels Nest has stepped up to the plate to help one such group at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH)–with a generous $30,000 gift to the Toro Guardian Scholars (TGS) program, dedicated to helping Toro students who have been in the foster care system. Originally, Angels Nest had planned to donate $25,000, specifically earmarked to pay for on-campus housing costs for TGS students. With the outbreak of COVID-19, it quickly became clear that those students would need even more help. That's when Angels Nest stepped up ... Read More

Daily Breeze: “Carson’s Cal State Dominguez Hills Aims to Preserve Coronavirus History”
Source: Daily Breeze These are historic times and in the era of the coronavirus pandemic, everyone is part of the still-unfolding story. Carson's Cal State Dominguez Hills wants to tell that story to future generations via paintings, social media posts, digital photos, journal entries and the like created by Southern California residents while it's still happening. Greg Williams, director of the Gerth Archives and Special Collections at the university, described the process as “collecting in advance of the past.” “This is not a collection for tomorrow because everybody is living it right now,” Williams said. “It's a collection for 20, 50 or 100 years from now. “It's not too ... Founding Day 2020
Happy 60th Founding Day, Toros! On April 29, 1960, Governor Edmund G. (Pat) Brown signed into law the establishment of the "South Bay State College." The need for a campus in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County became apparent as a response to a rising population in the 1950s influenced by the growth of families of World War II veterans, and by emerging aerospace and defense industries. Take a look at some of these snapshots in CSUDH's history. FUN FACTS: The Palos Verdes Peninsula was the proposed location of the campus. As planning continued, alternative sites were considered in Torrance, Culver City, and the Rancho San Pedro land known as Dominguez Hills. CSUDH held its ... Read More

Toros and Friends Craft Masks to Protect Students and Health Care Professionals
Grabbing from a stack of material leftover from quilting projects, Cheryl McKnight slides strips of 100 percent cotton into her “workhorse” sewing machine, stitching them into face masks for the Rosecrans Care Center in Gardena. McKnight is the director of the Center for Service Learning, Internships and Civic Engagement (SLICE) at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). She began making masks in March after SLICE Coordinator Miami Gelvizon-Gatpandan told her that the staff at the care center where her sister works as an LVN and infection preventionist had run out of face coverings to protect patients and themselves from COVID-19. “I got online and found a pattern and ... But given how major events – including public health disasters – have historically resulted in major societal changes, the Daily Breeze asked Prager about how the coronavirus pandemic may affect not only how we live, but how we work.
