When Magdalena Lara was tasked to milk the five goats on her family’s farm each morning before school, or help her mother make yogurt and cheese using the goat’s milk and active bacteria cultures, it turns out she was doing more than childhood chores; she was cultivating a curiosity of the natural world that would lay the groundwork for her future studies. “I would always ask my family why and how things worked. I wanted to know more when I found out about something new,” recalls Lara, the oldest of six siblings raised by immigrant parents on the one-acre farm in Norco, Calif. Project Reach Empowers Compton Students to Improve Academic Performance

California State University, Dominguez Hills College of Education's Project Reach is increasingly being recognized for its work helping to improve the test scores and academic performance of students in Compton Unified School District. The comprehensive K-12 tutoring initiative that utilizing college students to provide academic support services to schools in Compton Unified School District was touted by the national publication District Administration in its naming of Compton Unified as a "District of Distinction." Training Teachers in STEM Day for LA Unified School District

New Teachers Summer Institute participate works on a math problem in a workshop facilitated by CSI3, an institute invited by LAUSD to host their STEM Day, a full day of presenters, panelists and workshops.

The California STEM Institute for Innovation and Improvement (CSI3) at California State University, Dominguez Hills hosted a STEM Day for the New Teacher Summer Institute (NTSI) given by Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The district conducts NTSI for its incoming teachers. CSI3 was invited by LAUSD to facilitate a day of training that demonstrated and explained how to implement innovative STEM activities into the classroom. In turn, CSI3 prepared a full day of workshops, speakers and panelists engaging teachers in various STEM fields. The day revolved around nine interactive and collaborative workshops. STEM in Education Conference Highlights the Future

Nearly 350 attendees spent their Saturday on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) for the second annual STEM in Education conference on June 7, 2014. Students, faculty, K-12 math and science teachers, educational organizations, and professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) from around the country mingled during the day-long event, which was hosted by CSUDH's California STEM Institute for Innovation and Improvement (CSI3).
