Annual Staff Awards Celebrate Service, Commitment to Students

Staff and administrators at California State University, Dominguez Hills were honored with an awards ceremony on July 15 in the Loker Student Union. Longtime employees from every department on campus were welcomed by President Mildred García, who noted that “No matter where you work, you are an educator here at Cal State Dominguez Hills.” “You are all working to make sure our students have the best environment possible,” she said of the 104 employees who are eligible this year for recognition of their fifth, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, or 35th anniversaries at CSU Dominguez Hills. “All of you should be proud that the jobs we have transform the lives of students every day. Music Department Earns Full Term of Accreditation from NASM

The music department at California State University, Dominguez Hills has recently been given another full ten-year accreditation by the National Association of Music Schools (NASM). Richard Kravchak, professor of music and the department’s chair, says that CSU Dominguez Hills is one of only nine music departments in all of California to hold accreditation from both NASM and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, an achievement he is proud of in the face of the state’s budget reductions in higher education and that he credits “the degree of personal involvement of all of our faculty in the education of every music student.” “All of our music professors are practicing creative ... When Gloria Lopez was in the seventh grade at Virgil Middle School in Los Angeles, her teacher taught her and her classmates that history was “more than just memorizing dates and events, it is about understanding different cultures and their experiences.” Later at Belmont High School, her passion for 20th century European and Latin American history was encouraged by her tenth grade teacher. “History is the one subject that I find the most intriguing,” says Lopez. “Back in the tenth grade I found it interesting to learn about World War I, World War II, and the Cold War, about Hitler, and about communism. Katlin Choi: Grad Student Awarded Fulbright to University of Macau

Katlin Choi, a graduate student in the Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding program at California State University, Dominguez Hills, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program Scholarship that will allow her to travel abroad to Macau to teach English as a foreign language during the 2010-11 academic year. Having earned her bachelor’s degree in political science at UCLA specializing in urban studies, Choi will be working in the English Language Center at the University of Macau (UM) with other Fulbright students to organize and implement extracurricular programs such as field trips and a weeklong English Festival, in English for UM students and assisting with ...
