Riding the Wave: Consul General Visit to Campus Helps Expand Knowledge of Korea
Can you name any nation that has sealed its bond with another nation by successfully sharing ideals, especially freedom, liberty, democracy and prosperity? Such was a question that the Honorable Yeon-sung Shin, consul general of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles, posed to an audience of more than 100 students, faculty, and staff on Feb. 8 in Loker Student Union. Answering the rhetorical question, Shin shared an overview of the evolving relationship between the U.S. and Republic of Korea (South Korea), beginning with the Korean War more than six decades ago. Olympic Hopeful Carmelita Jeter Returns to Her Alma Mater
A bit of perspective has helped Carmelita Jeter (Class of '06, B.A. physical education) find her way to the front of the pack again. Returning to her alma mater to address a standing-room-only audience as the speaker of the Alumni Spotlight series on Thursday, Feb. 9, Jeter, who in June will participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints with her eye on competing in the London Summer Olympics this August, discussed how her successes and failures while at CSU Dominguez Hills, and later as a professional athlete, have taught her that it's not always how fast you run that wins races. Black Chamber President to Discuss Economic Sustainability for African American Businesses
On Monday, Feb. 13, the California African American Political and Economic Institute (CAAPEI) at California State University, Dominguez Hills presents “Building Economically Sustainable Communities through Small Business Development,” a lecture by Aubry L. Stone, president/CEO of the California Black Chamber of Commerce and director of the California Black Chamber Foundation. The lecture will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Loker Student Union. Stone has led the California Black Chamber of Commerce and its foundation since their inception in 1995. Super Sunday: Spreading the Gospel of College to African American Communities
Church has long been the heart and soul of the African American community, and when the California State University system was looking at effective ways to increase college-going rates among black students, the church was a natural starting point. And since 2005, CSU president, vice presidents and Chancellor Charlie Reed–along with students and staff from the 23 campuses–have been visiting black churches throughout the state during the month of February for an event that is known as Super Sunday.
