California State University, Dominguez Hills President Mildred García lauded literary and creative works by 53 resident faculty and staff authors who have published books or other media since 2008 during a reception in the University Bookstore on Thursday, Feb. 2.
García praised the achievement of faculty and staff, saying, “You engage your students through this work, you represent Dominguez Hills internationally and nationally through this work, and you have put Dominguez Hills on the map.”
She added that the university’s online Directory of Awards, Scholarly Work, Creative Activities, and Civic Engagement, which is maintained by the University Library, is a wonderful tool to continually showcase the works of faculty and staff to the nation, and the faculty/staff author section in the University Bookstore is critical because it provides an example to students of what they may achieve.
Incoming provost and vice president of academic affairs Ramon Torrecilha also addressed reception attendees.
“It is critical that we stay at the forefront of our disciplines, and that we provide our students with the latest knowledge, the latest thinking, and that we engage them in research. That’s our responsibility,” said Torrecilha, himself a published scholar while at UC Irvine, the Social Science Research Council, and Mills College. “Our continued education helps instill in students, the transformative power of knowledge and in doing so, it propels them to do well in their careers and in graduate school.”
