Olympic Hopeful Carmelita Jeter Returns to Her Alma Mater
A bit of perspective has helped Carmelita Jeter (Class of '06, B.A. physical education) find her way to the front of the pack again. Returning to her alma mater to address a standing-room-only audience as the speaker of the Alumni Spotlight series on Thursday, Feb. 9, Jeter, who in June will participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints with her eye on competing in the London Summer Olympics this August, discussed how her successes and failures while at CSU Dominguez Hills, and later as a professional athlete, have taught her that it's not always how fast you run that wins races. College is Possible: University Partners with Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Staples Foundation on Community Town Hall
On Saturday, Jan. 28, approximately 200 people were on campus to attend the College is Possible town hall meeting sponsored by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) and Staples Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Staples office supply company. Intended to promote the importance of higher education for students and their families, the event provided participants with the opportunity to attend various bilingual presentations on topics such as preparing and paying for college, applying for college, and researching financial aid. California State University, Dominguez Hills President Mildred García lauded literary and creative works by 53 resident faculty and staff authors who have published books or other media since 2008 during a reception in the University Bookstore on Thursday, Feb. 2. The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation to Help CSU Dominguez Hills Bridge Math Proficiency Divide
The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation has awarded California State University, Dominguez Hills a $250,000 grant allocated over two years to expand its summer and first year developmental math program to include all incoming freshmen who require additional math courses to bring them to college-level proficiency. Lack of true college-readiness in math in the critical first year of his or her university experience has been shown to have negative implications on a student's ability to continue their college education, especially for students who come from low-income areas and are often the first in their families to attend college.
