About 450 of the nearly 600 full- and part-time staff members at California State University, Dominguez Hills came out from virtually every nook and cranny of the campus to enjoy a complimentary lunch in their honor on July 10. Although the line for food winded around the Loker Student Union Palm Courtyard, workers were having a great time taking a break from their duties, visiting with each other and enjoying some good eats. OLLI Summer Program Provides Enrichment
Members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at California State University, Dominguez Hills had a busy week of special events recently as part of its summer program that runs through August. In commemoration of Juneteenth marking the end of slavery, OLLI's seniors–the institute is open to those 50 and older interested in continued educational enrichment–gathered on June 19 for an afternoon of history, traditional food, and song. Super Sunday: Spreading the Gospel of College to African American Communities
Church has long been the heart and soul of the African American community, and when the California State University system was looking at effective ways to increase college-going rates among black students, the church was a natural starting point. And since 2005, CSU president, vice presidents and Chancellor Charlie Reed–along with students and staff from the 23 campuses–have been visiting black churches throughout the state during the month of February for an event that is known as Super Sunday. College is Possible: University Partners with Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Staples Foundation on Community Town Hall
On Saturday, Jan. 28, approximately 200 people were on campus to attend the College is Possible town hall meeting sponsored by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) and Staples Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Staples office supply company. Intended to promote the importance of higher education for students and their families, the event provided participants with the opportunity to attend various bilingual presentations on topics such as preparing and paying for college, applying for college, and researching financial aid.
