Biology students at Cal State Dominguez Hills will soon be able to do their own DNA sequencing, seeing the molecular structures of plants, bacteria and other living things more closely than ever before. The Carson university's Department of Biology has won a National Science Foundation grant for $216,310 to purchase an Illumina MiSeq DNA sequencer. “We can do tons more experiments,” said Karin Kram, an assistant professor of biology who led a team that sought the grant. “One of the things I'd really like to do is have students in my microbiology classes identify microbes found on our phones. Now, we identify them to a genus level with biochemical tests. But, with this, we can identify ... Read More

Spanish-Speaking Teachers Getting Special Training to Meet California’s Demand for more Bilingual Teachers
A first step for Los Angeles is training the teachers who will be working in the district's 16 new dual language programs starting this year, said Hilda Maldonado. With these new classes, the district's bilingual programs will grow to more than 100. Besides in-house training, the district also sent a dozen bilingual teachers to a two-week summer institute at CSU Dominguez Hills in June. And the district is partnering with a training program offered through UC Davis to help strengthen bilingual teachers' abilities to teach Common Core standards in math and English language arts in formal Spanish by helping them build their vocabularies and their abilities to communicate with students ... CSUDH Heeds the Call for More Dual-Language Teachers
In 1996, California reduced the number of students per classroom from 30 to 20, creating thousands of teaching jobs throughout the state, only to have many disappear a decade later during the economic downturn, including progressive dual-language teaching positions. That has changed in recent years with the state's economic boom, and the passage of the California Non-English Languages Allowed in Public Education Act (Proposition 58) in November 2016. Today, there is a bilingual teacher shortage, and California State University, Dominguez Hills' (CSUDH) College of Education heeded the call with the creation of its two-week, Spanish immersion Dual-Language Institute in June 2016. “This ...
