The College of Business Administration and Public Policy's new School of Public Service and Justice has named its first director - C. Augustus “Gus” Martin, professor of criminal justice administration. A nationally recognized expert on terrorism, homeland security, and criminal justice, Martin has been with the university since 2001. He has served CSUDH in a variety of roles, including associate vice president for faculty affairs and associate vice president for human resources management. The essay examines 20th century philosopher Paul RicÅ“ur's account of narrative identity and asks the practical question of what it looks like to tell our stories–and narrate ourselves–well. Teddy the Toro has been high-stepping across campus for over two decades, spreading Toro spirit and encouragement at just about every event that takes place at CSUDH. A typical day for the “#1 Mascot in California” starts off with a quick check of their Instagram messages, followed by “meeting with campus squirrels for the latest updates.” The rest of their day is spent walking around campus, “checking in with my Toros,” according to Teddy. On January 18, California State University, Dominguez Hills was named one of 45 California colleges and universities chosen to take part “Californians for All” College Corps, the largest state-level investment in a college service program in California history. In total, 16 CSU campuses were included in the historic $146 million investment in California's future leaders. The new service-based college opportunity program will provide up to 6,500 college students statewide with opportunities to serve in three key areas: K-12 education, climate action, food insecurity, and COVID-19 recovery. Fab Lab Teams with Toyota to Bring Dream Cars to Life
Students working in the fabrication labs in CSUDH's Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE) got an accelerated course in hands-on project management and design in 2021, when they partnered with Toyota USA for the company's annual Toyota Dream Car USA Art Contest. Each year, children between the ages of 4 and 15 enter the contest, drawing fantastical images that illustrate the car of their dreams. Holiday Toy Drives Showcase Toro Generosity
Generous members of the Toro community turned out for a pair of on-campus toy drives during the first weeks of December. The drives were sponsored by CSUDH's Center for Service Learning, Internships and Civic Engagement (SLICE) and its Jumpstart program; and the CSUDH Police Department (DHPD). As a result, hundreds of children from underserved communities received holiday gifts. Donald R. Gerth (1928-2021): Former CSUDH President Left His Mark on the CSU
Former CSUDH president Donald R. Gerth passed away on December 6, 2021, at the age of 93. He was one of the most important figures in the success and growth of the CSU system, serving within it from 1958 until his retirement in 2003. “Few individuals are as inextricably tied to the CSU - and have so wonderfully lived out the university's highest ideals - as Donald R. CSUDH's stalwart support for Latinx transfer students has earned the university recognition as a 2021 Equity Champion for Excellence in Transfer for Latinx Students. Announced at the Champions of Higher Education and Equity Champions for Excellence in Transfer annual awards ceremony, CSUDH's honor reflected the university's success in leading the state in supporting Latinx students through the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) program.
